How to improve SEO of your e-store pages

Every e-store nowadays focuses marketing and SEO is a huge part of it. SEO is responsible for bringing in organic traffic, promoting your brand and helping with overall sales activities. Even though being professional in this field takes years of studying and practice, you can however, ensure that your store has fundamental SEO practices executed well. These steps don’t require additional investments, however, they take time be properly implemented. This article covers how you can improve SEO of your pages right from PrestaShop.

  1. Ensure that your homepage and other page titles are proper.

Page titles are displayed on search engine (Like Google) results pages as the clickable headline for a given result. In addition, search engines use page titles to recognize what information the website contains. Ideally page titles should include the search term for which the website has been optimized.

It is best to keep the title short and simple while using main keywords to describe your e-shop (128 characters max). Make sure to create a title for each page of your website – it should include your company name and summary to best describe page content.

To do this, navigate to Dashboard > Traffic & SEO > SEO & URLs > Locate “index” page and click “edit” button. From there, change the title in Page title field.

A good example for page title would look something like this.

[Product Name] – [Product Category] | [Brand Name]

It’s short, concise and up to a point.

Bad example, however, is confusing, has too much keywords and might even be cut off by search engines resulting in partly displayed title:

Brand Name | Major Product Category – Minor Product Category – Name of Product

Make sure to take the advantage of page titles but try not to overdo it.

  1. Optimize your tags.

While you are in SEO & URLS section of the dashboard, we might as well change page meta description, meta keyword and rewritten URL all of which are very important part for search engines. All these changes can be done by navigating to Dashboard > Traffic & SEO > SEO & URLs > Locate “index” page and clicking “edit” button.

Meta description is a snippet of up to 255 characters which summarizes page’s content. Search engines show the meta description in search results mostly when the searched-for phrase is within the description, so optimizing the meta description is crucial for on-page SEO. While a good meta description differs between every business, we suggest emphasizing your selling point(s), benefits with using few main keywords and to spark interest to the readers.

Meta Keywords should be used as most important keywords to define your website and to have your site referenced by search engines. The secret here also lies in simplicity – make sure to use main keywords without much repetition.

Rewritten URL field helps creating friendly URLs for your page. This is an example of not so friendly URL:

http://www.shop.com/form.php?form_id=1

A good example for friendly URL would look like this:

http://www.shop.com/contact-form/

Even when this link is taken out of context, you can tell from the URL what you’re likely to find on that page. Search engines can split that URL into words and use that information to better determine the content of the page. Also, It’s an easy URL to remember and to pass to another person. Even though default PrestaShop pages have friendly URLs, make sure that all your new pages (i.e. that might come from modules) best portray the contents of your page as well as have friendly URLs. That way you can ensure your pages are up to a SEO standard.
